I just loved the sheer scale of it, and how if you got really close all you could see was little dots of paint, but when you stood back you could see how each dot, in its perfect place, created a whole scene of one precious Sunday afternoon. I visited this painting often as a child growing up in Chicago. In this way the novel reminded me of a pointillist painting, like Georges Seurat's "A Sunday Afternoon on the Isle de la Grand Jatte".
The reader will have to use her imagination to find the string connecting all the sections together. Some sections are three or four pages long, some are one sentence, a couple are just pictures. It is arranged in 1001 sections, an intentional mirroring of the 1001 Tales of the Arabian Nights. Here's what I wrote about it in my review:
Its a fair question, and once I understood the format, it made me love the book even more.
